The bar chart illustrates the amount of greenhouse gases produced by five different sectors in New Zealand during the last year, measured in million tonnes of CO2 equivalent.

Overall, agriculture was by far the largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, whereas the waste sector produced the least amount. The total emissions from all sectors combined were clearly dominated by just two areas.

Agriculture alone accounted for the highest emissions, releasing 37.5 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent. This figure was considerably higher than the 25.2 million tonnes generated by the energy sector, which was the second-largest emitter. Together, these two sectors were responsible for the majority of New Zealand's greenhouse gas output.

In contrast, the remaining sectors had much lower emission levels. Transport contributed 14.6 million tonnes, followed closely by industry at 10.8 million tonnes. The smallest amount was from waste, generating just 4.3 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent, making it significantly less impactful than any other sector.
