There is a debate about whether educators should instruct students in proper conduct and ethics, or if their role should be limited to academic instruction. This essay will discuss both viewpoints before presenting my own opinion on this matter.
Some people argue that teachers have a vital role in shaping the overall development of young people. They believe that schools are not just places for learning facts, but also for preparing students to be responsible members of society. Therefore, teaching good behaviour, respect, and moral values becomes an important part of a teacher's job, ensuring students grow up with a strong ethical foundation.
On the other hand, many hold the view that teachers already have a demanding workload focused on delivering the curriculum. They contend that adding the responsibility of moral education would stretch teachers too thin and divert attention from core subjects like maths or science. Furthermore, this perspective often suggests that fundamental moral teaching is primarily the responsibility of parents and the family unit.
In my opinion, while the main purpose of schools is academic education, teachers do have a part to play in promoting good behaviour within the school environment. This helps create a positive atmosphere for learning. However, comprehensive moral and ethical instruction should mainly come from families, with schools reinforcing these lessons through daily interactions and school rules, rather than leading this education.
To conclude, while some advocate for teachers to provide moral guidance, others believe their focus should remain purely academic. I believe that teachers should support good conduct in school, but the core responsibility for moral teaching lies with parents.
