Some people believe that younger family members should be legally responsible for supporting older family members when they become physically, mentally and financially unable to take care of themselves. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

It is sometimes suggested that adult children should have a legal obligation to care for their elder parents, especially when these parents can no longer manage on their own due to physical, mental, or financial difficulties. I largely disagree with this idea, believing that while moral support is important, legal enforcement of financial responsibility is problematic.

My primary objection is that legally compelling younger family members to provide financial support places an unreasonable burden on them. Many adult children in a large city, for example, are already facing significant financial pressures themselves, such as mortgages, raising their own families, or navigating high living costs. Forcing them to take on the full financial burden of their parents could severely impact their own economic stability and quality of life. This could also lead to resentment within families, rather than fostering genuine care.

Furthermore, the responsibility for supporting elderly citizens should primarily rest with the state rather than individual families. In many countries, citizens pay taxes throughout their working lives, and part of these contributions should be allocated to social welfare programs designed to care for the elderly. This ensures a more equitable system where the burden is shared across society, and professional care can be provided consistently. Relying solely on family members might lead to inconsistent quality of care or neglect if the children are unable or unwilling to provide adequate support.

In conclusion, while I acknowledge the moral duty many feel towards their aging parents, I do not believe this should be translated into a legal requirement for financial support. The state, funded by its citizens, is better positioned to ensure the well-being of all older family members.
