Public access to information is a topic of ongoing discussion, with some advocating for government-funded libraries in every city. However, others suggest that such initiatives are unnecessary because home internet access already provides information readily. This essay will discuss both perspectives before presenting my own view on this matter.

Those who support the establishment of free public libraries often highlight their role in promoting literacy and equal access to knowledge. For instance, not everyone in a large city has reliable internet at home, or the devices to use it. Libraries provide a quiet space for study and access to a wide range of books, magazines, and other resources that might not be available online, or which require payment. They also serve as important community hubs, offering various programmes and services beyond just information retrieval.

Conversely, opponents argue that the widespread availability of the internet has diminished the need for physical libraries. They believe that with a smartphone or computer, individuals can access vast amounts of information instantly and conveniently from their own homes. From this viewpoint, spending public money on maintaining library buildings and staff is seen as a waste, as these resources could be better allocated to other essential public services, such as healthcare or infrastructure.

In my opinion, despite the prevalence of the internet, free libraries continue to hold significant value and are not a waste of money. While many people have internet at home, there are still segments of the population, including those on lower incomes or the elderly, who benefit greatly from free public facilities. Furthermore, libraries offer a physical space for community engagement and learning that digital platforms cannot fully replicate. Therefore, governments in many countries should continue to invest in these institutions.

To conclude, while some argue that internet access makes free libraries obsolete, others emphasize their crucial role in society. I believe that libraries remain vital for ensuring equitable access to information and fostering community, making them a worthwhile investment for any government.
