There is a debate about whether educators should instruct students on ethical behaviour and distinguishing right from wrong, or if their role should be confined to academic subjects such as mathematics and history. This essay will discuss both perspectives before presenting my own opinion.

On the one hand, some people argue that teachers have a vital role in shaping a child's character. Schools are places where children spend a significant portion of their day, interacting with peers and adults. Therefore, it is believed that teachers can impart essential social skills, teach respect for others, and help students understand moral principles. This holistic approach to education aims to produce well-rounded individuals who are not only knowledgeable but also responsible members of society.

However, others contend that the primary function of schools is academic instruction. They believe that parents are fundamentally responsible for their children's moral upbringing and good behaviour. Teachers are trained in specific academic disciplines, and expecting them to also act as moral guides could dilute their focus and expertise. Furthermore, different families and cultures may hold varying moral standards, making it difficult for teachers to universally apply ethical lessons without potentially conflicting with home values.

In my opinion, while teachers naturally influence students' behaviour through their example, their main responsibility should be academic education. While schools can reinforce positive social norms, the foundational teaching of right and wrong is best handled within the family unit. Parents are typically best placed to instil these values consistently and in a way that aligns with their family's beliefs.

In conclusion, there are valid arguments for teachers either focusing on moral education or strictly on academic subjects. While schools undoubtedly contribute to social development, I believe their core mission should remain academic, with moral guidance primarily falling to parents.
