The table presents the number of residents, in thousands, living in four different housing types across four distinct German regions between 1980 and 2015.

Overall, apartments consistently housed the largest number of residents, particularly in urban and suburban areas, throughout the period. In contrast, semi-detached and terraced houses generally accommodated fewer people, with most housing types showing either a slight increase or decrease over the 35 years.

Apartments were the most popular housing type, with urban areas seeing an increase from 1,200,000 residents in 1980 to 1,420,000 in 2015. Suburban areas also experienced growth in apartment dwellers, rising from 540,000 to 620,000. Detached houses were also significant, especially in rural areas, where they housed 520,000 people in 1980, though this figure slightly declined to 490,000 by 2015.

Terraced houses and semi-detached houses typically had lower resident numbers. For example, terraced houses in urban areas decreased slightly from 400,000 to 390,000. Semi-detached houses maintained relatively stable populations, such as in small towns, where numbers increased marginally from 90,000 to 95,000. Rural areas showed a general decline across these smaller housing types.
