Overall, there was a noticeable shift away from spending on basic necessities like food towards housing and leisure activities. While some categories saw significant changes, the expenditure on 'Other' items remained constant.

In 1970, food accounted for the largest share of income at 35%, but this fell considerably to 20% by 2010. Conversely, housing, which was 20% in 1970, became the biggest expense by 2010, rising to 30%. Spending on clothing also decreased significantly from 15% to 8% over the four decades.

Regarding other areas, transport costs increased from 10% to 15%. Similarly, the proportion of income allocated to recreation grew from 10% in 1970 to 17% in 2010. The percentage of weekly income spent on 'Other' categories remained steady at 10% in both years.
