There is an ongoing discussion about why crime happens. Some people believe that external factors such as poverty or other social difficulties are the main reasons. However, others think that the problem lies within individuals, suggesting that some people are simply bad by nature. This essay will discuss both perspectives before presenting my own opinion.
On the one hand, many agree that a person's surroundings play a significant role in criminal behaviour. For example, individuals living in extreme poverty might turn to crime out of desperation to meet basic needs like food and shelter. A lack of educational opportunities or stable employment can also lead to feelings of hopelessness, which can push people towards illegal activities. Therefore, it is argued that improving social conditions could reduce crime rates.
On the other hand, some people argue that personality and inherent moral character are the primary causes of crime. They believe that certain individuals possess a natural inclination towards violence or dishonesty, regardless of their upbringing or economic situation. From this viewpoint, a person's choices are seen as entirely their own, and society's role is to punish those who choose to break the law, rather than focusing on external factors.
In my opinion, while individual choices always matter, the evidence suggests that most crime is indeed a result of social and economic circumstances. Although a small number of people might have antisocial tendencies, the sheer volume of crime in many countries points to systemic issues rather than widespread inherent 'badness'. Addressing issues like inequality and lack of opportunity is crucial for crime prevention.
