The proposition to prohibit the use of mobile phones in shared public spaces like libraries, shops, and public transport is a topic that prompts considerable debate. While there are certainly arguments for such restrictions, I largely disagree with a complete ban, believing it to be an impractical and unnecessary measure in most situations.

My primary objection stems from the practical utility that mobile phones offer individuals in their daily lives. In many countries today, these devices are not merely for entertainment but serve as essential tools for communication, navigation, and even emergencies. For instance, a person might need to contact family, confirm an appointment, or call for assistance in an unexpected situation while on public transport. Banning phones would remove this immediate access to vital help and information, which could lead to significant inconvenience or even safety concerns.

Furthermore, the argument for a ban often overlooks the fact that many people use their phones responsibly, causing no disturbance to others. Most individuals use headphones for calls or media, or keep their conversations quiet and brief. While loud conversations can be annoying, this is a matter of etiquette rather than the device itself. Implementing a blanket ban would unfairly penalise the majority for the actions of a few, and it would be challenging to enforce effectively across a large city.

In conclusion, while I acknowledge that excessive noise from mobile phones can be disruptive, I maintain that a full prohibition is neither justifiable nor feasible. The essential functions phones provide, coupled with the prevalence of responsible use, mean that a focus on promoting considerate behaviour is a more appropriate solution than an outright ban.
