It is increasingly common for parents to place significant demands on their children, expecting them to achieve high levels of success. While the intentions behind this often stem from a desire for their children's well-being, I believe this trend is largely a negative development.

One primary reason for this parental behaviour is the competitive nature of modern society. Parents, having experienced challenges themselves, want to ensure their children have every possible advantage. They often believe that pushing their children academically or in other activities will prepare them better for future success. For example, in many countries, admission to good universities is highly competitive, leading parents to pressure their children to excel in exams and extracurriculars from an early age. This intense focus, however, can lead to children feeling overwhelmed and anxious, potentially damaging their self-esteem if they do not meet these high standards.

While a certain amount of encouragement can be beneficial for a child's development, excessive pressure can have detrimental effects. Children subjected to constant high expectations may develop a fear of failure, which can hinder their creativity and willingness to take risks. Furthermore, the focus on external achievements might overshadow the importance of their emotional and social development. As a result, they might grow up feeling unhappy or unfulfilled, despite achieving what their parents desired. Therefore, even though parents mean well, the outcome is often not positive.

In conclusion, although parental pressure often originates from a desire for children to succeed in a challenging world, its prevalent form today is a negative development. It can lead to significant stress and an imbalance in a child's overall growth.
