The overall band score for the IELTS Writing section is the final score you receive, ranging from 0 to 9, in half-band increments (e.g., 6.0, 6.5, 7.0). This score is derived from your performance on both Task 1 and Task 2. Examiners assess each task independently based on specific criteria outlined in the public band descriptors.

Task 2, the essay, contributes more significantly to your overall writing score than Task 1. Specifically, Task 2 is weighted twice as much as Task 1. This weighting reflects the greater complexity and length required for Task 2, which typically demands more developed arguments, vocabulary, and grammatical structures.

How the Overall Band Score is Calculated

To determine the overall band score, the individual scores for Task 1 and Task 2 are combined. The Task 2 score is doubled, then added to the Task 1 score, and the total is divided by three. The resulting number is then rounded to the nearest half-band.

  • Example: If a candidate scores 6.0 for Task 1 and 7.0 for Task 2, the calculation is as follows: (6.0 + (7.0 * 2)) / 3 = (6.0 + 14.0) / 3 = 20.0 / 3 = 6.66. This score would be rounded up to an overall band score of 7.0.
  • Example: If a candidate scores 6.5 for Task 1 and 6.0 for Task 2, the calculation is: (6.5 + (6.0 * 2)) / 3 = (6.5 + 12.0) / 3 = 18.5 / 3 = 6.16. This score would be rounded down to an overall band score of 6.0.

Understanding this weighting is crucial for test preparation, as it highlights the importance of dedicating sufficient time and effort to mastering Task 2 to achieve your target overall writing band score.
