Memorized answer

A memorized answer is a pre-prepared response copied in the exam, not created in response to the actual IELTS Writing task prompt.
IELTS Writing

A memorized answer in IELTS Writing refers to a response that a candidate has learned by heart before the test and reproduces in the exam, regardless of the specific question asked. This type of answer is not tailored to the actual task prompt but instead repeats pre-written phrases, templates, or essays.

Why memorized answers matter in IELTS Writing

  • Relevance: Examiners are trained to recognize memorized content. If an answer does not address the specific question or topic, it is considered irrelevant and may receive a lower score for Task Response or Task Achievement.
  • Band descriptors: According to public band descriptors, answers that do not address the task, or include memorized material, can be penalized. This may result in a band score of 4 or lower for Task Response.
  • Example: If a Writing Task 2 prompt asks about the advantages and disadvantages of online education, but a candidate writes a generic essay about the importance of education using memorized sentences, the response will not fully address the question and may be marked down.
  • Authenticity: IELTS assesses a candidate's ability to communicate original ideas in English. Memorized answers do not demonstrate real language skills or the ability to respond to new prompts.

To achieve a higher band, candidates should write original responses that directly answer the question, using their own words and relevant examples.
