In IELTS Academic Writing Task 1, “key features” refer to the most significant and prominent details, trends, comparisons, or stages presented in the visual information (e.g., line graph, bar chart, pie chart, table, map, or process diagram). Identifying and reporting these features accurately and comprehensively is crucial for achieving a good score.
For a line graph showing sales figures over time, key features might include the overall trend (e.g., a steady increase), the highest and lowest points, significant fluctuations, and notable comparisons between different categories. For a process diagram, key features would involve outlining the main stages of the process in a logical sequence.
Why it matters for your IELTS band:
- Task Achievement: The IELTS public band descriptors for Task 1 explicitly state that to achieve a Band 6 or higher, a response must “present an overview with key features clearly presented” and “select and report main features.” Failing to identify and report the key features adequately will limit your score in this criterion.
- Clarity and Cohesion: Focusing on key features helps you structure your response logically, ensuring that your overview and subsequent paragraphs highlight the most important information without getting bogged down in minor details.
Example: If a bar chart displays the percentage of people using different modes of transport in a city over three decades, a key feature would be identifying the mode that consistently dominated or declined significantly, or a new mode that emerged and gained popularity. Reporting every single percentage for every mode in every year would obscure these key trends and likely result in a lower band score.
