A Discussion (both views) essay is a common type of IELTS Academic and General Training Writing Task 2 essay. In this essay, you are presented with a statement or a topic that has two distinct, often opposing, viewpoints. Your primary task is to discuss both of these perspectives thoroughly and fairly in separate body paragraphs.
Why it matters for your IELTS Writing band:
Successfully writing a Discussion (both views) essay demonstrates your ability to:
- Address all parts of the prompt: You must clearly present and elaborate on both sides of the argument. Failing to discuss one view adequately will negatively impact your Task Response score.
- Organise your ideas logically: A well-structured essay with clear paragraphing for each view and your own opinion shows coherence and cohesion.
- Use a range of vocabulary and grammar: Discussing complex ideas and contrasting viewpoints requires precise language and varied sentence structures.
- Present a clear position: While discussing both views, you are typically expected to state your own opinion on the matter, either in the introduction, conclusion, or after presenting both sides. This contributes to your Task Response score.
Example prompt: “Some people believe that all university students should study a broad range of subjects, while others argue that they should specialise in one subject. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.” In response, you would dedicate one paragraph to discussing the benefits of a broad curriculum and another to the advantages of specialisation, before concluding with your personal stance.
