Academic Task 1 refers to the first writing task in the IELTS Academic module. In this task, candidates are presented with a visual input—such as a graph, chart, table, diagram, or map—and are required to write a factual report summarizing and comparing the key information. The minimum word count is 150 words, and the recommended time allocation is about 20 minutes.
Importance in the IELTS Writing Band
- Assessment Criteria: Academic Task 1 responses are marked based on four criteria: Task Achievement, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. Each criterion contributes equally to the overall Writing band score.
- Task Achievement: Candidates must present an overview, select relevant data, and make accurate comparisons. Failing to address all parts of the task or including personal opinions can lower the score.
- Coherence and Cohesion: Logical organization and effective use of linking devices are essential for clarity and flow.
- Lexical Resource and Grammar: A range of vocabulary and sentence structures is expected, with attention to accuracy.
Example
- If given a line graph showing international student numbers from 2000 to 2020, a high-scoring response would summarize overall trends, highlight significant changes, and compare data points without inserting personal views.
