Environmental degradation is a significant concern globally, and there is an ongoing debate about who holds the primary responsibility for addressing it. Some people believe that these issues are beyond the scope of individual action, while others maintain that personal efforts are essential for any real progress. This essay will discuss both viewpoints before offering a concluding perspective.

One perspective suggests that environmental problems are simply too vast for individuals to tackle effectively. Major issues like climate change, deforestation, and ocean plastic pollution are often driven by large industries and global economic systems. For example, a single person recycling their waste might seem insignificant when compared to the emissions from factories or agricultural practices. Therefore, proponents of this view argue that only governments, international organisations, and large corporations possess the resources and power to implement the large-scale changes necessary to make a substantial difference.

However, the opposing viewpoint emphasises the critical role of ordinary people. It is argued that collective individual actions can lead to significant positive impacts. When many people choose to reduce their energy consumption, use public transport, or buy sustainably produced goods, this creates a market demand that influences businesses and encourages more environmentally friendly practices. Furthermore, individual awareness and advocacy can pressure governments to enact stricter environmental policies, demonstrating that personal choices are not entirely powerless.

In my opinion, while the scale of environmental challenges is indeed immense, it would be incorrect to dismiss the power of individual actions. As a general reader living in a large city, I see how consumer choices can shape markets. Nevertheless, these individual efforts must be supported by broader, systemic changes. Governments and corporations have a crucial role in setting regulations, investing in green technologies, and educating the public. Without this top-down support, individual contributions, however well-intentioned, may not be enough to reverse the current trends.

In conclusion, there are valid arguments for both sides of this discussion. While some believe that environmental problems are too big for individuals, others highlight the importance of personal responsibility. My view is that a combination of individual commitment and large-scale, coordinated efforts from governments and industries is ultimately needed to achieve meaningful and lasting solutions.
