One long-distance flight consumes as much fuel as a car does in several years, and both cause a similar amount of pollution. Therefore, some people believe that non-essential flights, such as tourist travel, should be discouraged rather than limiting the use of cars. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

It is argued by some that because long-distance flights consume a large amount of fuel and cause significant pollution, non-essential air travel, such as tourism, should be discouraged rather than mainly focusing on limiting car use. I disagree with this opinion, as both modes of transport contribute to environmental problems and require attention, but limiting cars might have a broader impact.

My primary reason for disagreeing is that cars are used by a much larger number of people on a daily basis compared to airplanes. While a single flight does indeed consume a lot of fuel, the sheer volume of individual car journeys, often for short distances, adds up to a substantial amount of overall pollution. Therefore, policies aimed at reducing car dependency, for example by improving public transport in a large city, would likely have a more widespread and immediate positive effect on air quality and carbon emissions.

Furthermore, discouraging non-essential flights could have a very negative impact on the economies of many countries that rely heavily on tourism. For a general reader, the ability to travel for leisure or to visit family overseas is an important aspect of modern life. It would be unfair to place the entire burden of environmental responsibility solely on air travellers, especially when car use is so pervasive and often seen as essential for daily activities.

In conclusion, while air travel's environmental footprint is undeniable, I believe that discouraging non-essential flights is not a fair or effective primary solution. Both cars and airplanes contribute to pollution, and strategies should address both, with car usage perhaps warranting more immediate focus due to its widespread nature.
