The bar chart shows how many people in Australian cities are exposed to four different kinds of noise, during both the day and at night.
Overall, traffic noise has the highest number of people affected, especially in the daytime, while industrial noise disturbs the fewest. There are also notable changes in the rankings of noise types between day and night.
Looking at the details, traffic noise is the most common source, with 450 thousand people affected in the day, which is much higher than any other category. At night, the number falls to 380 thousand, but this still remains the largest group. Neighbourhood noise, on the other hand, impacts fewer people during the day (270 thousand), but at night it rises to 310 thousand, making it the second most common cause then.
For construction noise, 320 thousand people are affected in the daytime, which drops sharply to 150 thousand at night. Industrial noise is the least significant, with only 210 thousand during the day and 160 thousand at night, both considerably lower than the other types.
