Traffic congestion is a significant problem in many countries, and there are different ideas about how governments should address it. Some people suggest investing in public transportation like subways and train lines, while others believe that expanding road networks is the better solution. This essay will discuss both points of view before presenting my own opinion.

One perspective is that building new subway and train lines can effectively ease traffic. The main argument for this is that efficient public transport encourages people to leave their cars at home. When commuters have reliable and fast alternatives, they are less likely to drive, which reduces the number of vehicles on the roads. This also has environmental benefits, as fewer cars mean less pollution. For example, in a large city, a well-developed subway system can move a huge number of people quickly, making it a very practical choice.

However, another viewpoint suggests that the best way to reduce congestion is to build more and wider roads. Proponents of this idea argue that increasing road capacity directly addresses the problem by providing more space for vehicles. They might believe that if there are enough lanes, traffic will flow more smoothly, especially during peak hours. This approach can offer immediate relief in some areas, and it can be seen as a way to accommodate the growing number of cars that society uses.

In my opinion, while wider roads might offer a short-term fix, dedicating funds to public transport infrastructure is a more sustainable solution. As a general reader in a large city, I have observed that expanding roads often only leads to more cars on them in the long run, a phenomenon known as induced demand. Investing in modern subways and trains provides a permanent way to reduce the reliance on private vehicles and improve overall urban mobility.

In conclusion, there are valid arguments for both spending on public transport and expanding roads to tackle traffic problems. While wider roads can temporarily alleviate congestion, I believe that building subways and train lines offers a more effective and lasting answer for urban areas.
