For instance, the production of a single cotton T-shirt can use thousands of litres of water. Additionally, the industrial processes often release pollutants into rivers and the air, contributing to environmental degradation. This fast-paced production cycle means that these harmful practices are ongoing and intensify the damage.
Furthermore, the culture of rapidly changing fashion trends encourages overconsumption and, subsequently, increased waste. People are persuaded to discard perfectly wearable items to keep up with the latest styles. As a result, huge volumes of textiles end up in landfills, where they can take hundreds of years to decompose, releasing greenhouse gases in the process. Even when clothes are donated, many still cannot be resold and contribute to waste problems, particularly in developing countries.
In conclusion, the fashion industry's insistence on frequent new purchases undeniably harms the environment. The resource-intensive manufacturing and the resulting problem of textile waste both contribute to serious ecological challenges.
