Some people believe that public funds should be primarily used for promoting healthy lifestyles to prevent future illnesses, rather than for treating those who are already sick. While preventive measures are certainly valuable, I disagree with the idea that they should take precedence over the immediate care of patients who need help now.

My main reason is that there is a clear ethical duty to treat people who are currently suffering from health problems. When someone is ill, they require immediate medical attention, and it would be inhumane to deny them this care, regardless of how their illness developed. For instance, a person with a sudden injury or a severe infection cannot wait for long-term health campaigns to take effect; their condition demands urgent treatment to save their life or relieve their pain. Therefore, a significant portion of public health budgets must always be allocated to hospitals and medical facilities.

Furthermore, while promoting a healthy lifestyle is beneficial in the long run, its effects are not always immediate or guaranteed. Many illnesses have complex causes, including genetics or environmental factors, which cannot be entirely prevented through individual lifestyle changes. For example, some cancers or autoimmune diseases are not directly linked to diet or exercise. Investing solely in prevention might also lead to a neglect of research into cures and advanced treatments for existing conditions, which could improve the quality of life for many patients.

In conclusion, though encouraging a healthy population through prevention is important, the fundamental responsibility of any healthcare system is to address the needs of those who are currently ill. Public money should therefore continue to be spent on treating patients as a priority.
